Little Baddow Churches

Another American at the Chapel

The links between Little Baddow and America develop further!   Another American Minister and his wife are coming to the Chapel.  This time it is for a six month period commencing in mid-April until mid-October 2014.   We have to thank Ryan and Irish, for encouraging a long-time friend and Ryan’s mentor in the ministry, to come to Little Baddow as our acting minister while we progress the search for a longer term replacement to succeed Ryan as our minister

The couple are Bert and Lucille Keller who have been married for 35 years.  They currently live in Charleston, South Carolina.    Lucille is a retired schoolteacher, and they have three adult children: David, Charles, and John. During their time in the Village they will be living at the URC Manse beside the Chapel

Bert was Senior Minister, Circular Congregational Church UCC, Charleston, 1973-2010.    During  1973-2005 he was also Associate Professor (Bioethics), Medical University of South Carolina.  Bert  earlier held the position of Associate Professor (Greek and New Testament Studies and Moral Philosophy)   He also has a special interest in Church History.  Since Bert’s retirement from the Ministry, during 2010-2011 he, supported by Lucille, spent time in the UK in a similar acting minister’s role with the Northern Synod URC.

Bert is planning to arrive by air initially on his own before Easter, while Lucille is planning to come by sea about a month later.

They are both looking forward to becoming involved in Church life and to village life in general.  They no doubt have high expectations of what Little Baddow has to offer having heard Irish and Ryan wax lyrical about their time in Little Baddow.

I am sure they will not be disappointed!    I spoke to Bert to chat about the things he could get involved with during the 6 months.  I found myself detailing plans that surprised even myself as to the number of activities going on in the village in which he and indeed we all could get involved.  He arrives in time for all the Easter Services, followed by Christian Aid and Village Open Gardens. The Welsh Service follows soon thereafter.   The Heartbeat Festival Weekend is soon upon us followed quickly by the  Hooker and Eliot Service at Cuckoos and a lunch at the History Centre. This is  just before the mystery of a British Beetle Drive manifests itself in the Memorial Hall!  And there is plenty more to follow that!

Bert and Lucille are already impressed with the se wide variety of activities, the way in which the churches work together and the contribution being made to Village life.  I am sure the reality will meet and indeed beat their expectations.

We wish them God’s speed and safe journey as a prelude to an interesting and enjoyable time among us.  I am sure we will give them Little Baddow’s usual warm welcome.
